By day, London to Fort William takes two trains and about eight hours forty minutes. Avanti West Coast runs from London Euston to Glasgow Central in about four and a half hours, and a ScotRail train covers the rest, from Glasgow Queen Street to Fort William, in a little under four hours. On the weekday we checked, the departures from Euston that made the connection were the 07:30 and the 13:30.
The two trains use different Glasgow stations, so the change means leaving Glasgow Central and walking to Queen Street, about nine minutes on foot. On the typical journey there are 23 minutes between arriving at Central and leaving from Queen Street, which leaves around a quarter of an hour once the walk is done: enough to absorb a few minutes’ delay on the Avanti leg, but not much more.
The two departures are not equal when something goes wrong. Miss the connection off the 07:30 and the 18:24 from Queen Street is still to come; miss it off the 13:30, which is the one feeding that 18:24, and you have missed the last direct Fort William train from Queen Street on the timetable we checked. Other routings also turn up, through Edinburgh Waverley, via York, Edinburgh and Glasgow Queen Street, or with changes at Motherwell and Dalmuir, but they took from about 9h35 to 10 hours.
The alternative is the Caledonian Sleeper, which left London Euston at 21:15 on the weekday we checked and ran right through to Fort William with no change, arriving at about 10:00 the next morning. At twelve and three-quarter hours, with 20 stops, it is far slower on paper than the day trains, but it removes the Glasgow walk and turns a full day of travelling into an evening departure and a morning arrival. With a single departure that night, it suits travellers who can plan around the 21:15 from Euston.
The day trains and the sleeper both end at Fort William station, about ten minutes’ walk, some 700 metres, from the High Street.
Journey times and changes below come from the rail and bus timetables for Tuesday 1 December 2026. Weekend and holiday timetables differ, so check the day you travel.
