Take the direct ScotRail train from Glasgow Queen Street. It reaches Fort William after 15 stops and takes roughly three and three-quarter hours, with no change to worry about. What makes the trip awkward is the timetable rather than the ride: the direct trains from Queen Street to Fort William are hours apart, and on the weekday we checked they included departures at 08:22, 12:22 and 18:24.
Four hours separate the 08:22 and the 12:22, and six the 12:22 and the 18:24, so the train you pick at Queen Street shapes the whole day. The 08:22 gets to Fort William just after midday, the 12:22 a little after four in the afternoon, and the 18:24 shortly after ten at night. Missing one leaves you in Glasgow for hours, so get to Queen Street with time in hand rather than running for the 08:22 or the 12:22.
Two other journeys on the same weekday took a train only as far as Tyndrum Lower and finished by bus. They left Glasgow at 10:36 and 16:34 and took about 3h40, much the same as the direct train, so they slot usefully between the direct departures if neither the 08:22 nor the 12:22 fits your plans.
Late in the evening, a train to Dumbarton Central with a bus onward left at 22:17, and a bus running the whole way left at 22:50. That bus was the quickest journey of all, at about 2h45, but it reaches Fort William at around half past one in the morning. Routings through Oban or Inverness turned up as well and took from about 4h40 to more than six hours, which rules them out for almost anyone starting in Glasgow.
From Fort William station it is about ten minutes on foot, roughly 700 metres, to the High Street.
Journey times and changes below come from the rail and bus timetables for Tuesday 1 December 2026. Weekend and holiday timetables differ, so check the day you travel.
